#1 a brief introduction
i'm getting out of brain rot
Hello and welcome to Online Culture. Let me introduce myself. I’m Amber, Londoner (born and raised and cannot imagine myself anywhere else) and I’m writing my way out of brain rot.
Yes, after months of indecision, I’ve hopped on the bandwagon of making a substack. Am I too late to the game? Maybe. Equally, my notes app is running out of storage and what else would I be doing with my time other than being prisoner to the mentally decaying app that is TikTok. No, it makes sense to gather it all here - fashion stuff, tube observations, people watching, and anything that sparks a lightbulb above my head.
Although I’ve always loved writing I was never good at English in school. I didn’t care about whether a yellow door symbolises happiness or the effect of pathetic fallacy in Macbeth. It’s all pathetic anyway. And during my teenage years, I only wrote when I needed to release rage, heartbreak or sadness. It took me until the second year of uni that I joined the university magazine and decided to swing full force into my love for writing about all things arts culture and fashion. After a short stint of working in some corporate jobs, I realised I needed to get back in touch with writing, so here I am…whilst also studying an MA in Fashion Journalism.
I can’t lie, I love it and this is where I’m meant to be. The past two and a bit years spent working in bright light offices, cold emailing and calling sales ‘prospects’ took it out of me but I also can’t help but feel like I’m living in a paradise - a paradise of pretending I’m already an established fashion journalist interviewing cool designers, and writing up ‘food for thought’ copy. Career dread is common and expected to any 20-something and I guess the creation of Online Culture is something to ease my mind when I’m not producing any published work.
Anyway, I think I’ve talked enough about myself for now. I will be posting content every Friday and hope you enjoy my written words.
